How many roof tiles do I need?

Re-roofing or repairing — enter the roof area, pick your tile or slate type and get the number of tiles to buy with wastage, plus the metres of batten. Coverage changes with the pitch and product, so always check it against the maker's fixing sheet. Free, no sign-up.

This sets a typical coverage and batten gauge — change them below to match your exact product's fixing instructions.
The actual area of the sloping roof, both sides added together — not the footprint.
Only if you entered the flat footprint above. Multiplies it for the slope: ≈ 1.15 at 30°, 1.20 at 35°, 1.31 at 40°.
From the maker — set for the type above. Plain tiles ≈ 60, interlocking ≈ 10, slates depend on the lap.
The spacing up the slope between battens. Sets how many metres of batten you need.
For cuts at verges, hips and valleys, and breakages. 5–10% is normal.

A guide, not a guarantee. Tile and slate coverage varies a lot by product, the headlap for your pitch, and the batten gauge — so the figures here are typical defaults you should always check against the maker's fixing instructions for your roof's pitch. We size battens as the roof area divided by the gauge. Ridge, hip and valley tiles, eaves and tile-and-a-half tiles, breathable membrane, nails, clips and the mortar or dry-fix kit are all extra. Re-roofing is height work — use a scaffold and a competent roofer. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

How it works

Roof area, coverage, and battens.

Use the sloping area, not the footprint. A roof's actual area is bigger than the ground it covers because it slopes. Measure both sides of the slope and add them, or enter the flat footprint and a pitch factor — about 1.15 at 30°, 1.20 at 35°, 1.31 at 40° — and we'll multiply it up.

Coverage depends on the tile. Small plain tiles take about 60 per square metre; large interlocking concrete tiles about 10; pantiles around 16; and slates depend on their size and the headlap your pitch needs. We set a typical figure for the type you pick — but always confirm it against the maker's sheet for your pitch.

Battens run across the slope. Tiles hang on battens spaced up the roof at the "gauge" for that tile and pitch. We divide the roof area by the gauge to estimate the total metres of batten.

Add the trim separately. Ridge, hip and valley tiles, eaves and tile-and-a-half tiles at the verges, the breathable underlay membrane, nails and clips, and a mortar or dry-fix ridge kit are all extra — order those to suit your roof's shape.

Stay safe. Stripping and re-tiling a roof is serious height work that needs a proper scaffold and, for most people, a competent roofer. Use this to budget materials and sense-check a quote, not to take on a full re-roof unprepared.
